What is a Human Design Chart?

A Human Design chart is a personal diagram created using your birth date, time, and place. Also called a Bodygraph, it shows your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Centers, Gates, and Channels. In Human Design, these parts are used to explore how you make choices, use energy, and relate to other people.

The system brings together ideas from astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the chakra system. People use it as a tool for self-reflection rather than a test with right or wrong results.

How do I find my Human Design chart?

You can create your chart online by entering three birth details:

  • Birth date: the day, month, and year you were born.
  • Birth time: the most accurate time you have, including AM or PM.
  • Birthplace: the town or city and country where you were born.

Your birthplace helps the calculator work out the correct time zone. Use your birth location, not where you live now.

If you do not know your exact birth time, check your birth records or ask a family member. An estimated time may change some chart details, so treat the result as a starting point.

What does a Human Design chart tell you?

Your chart contains several parts. Each has a different meaning within the Human Design system:

  • Type: a broad description of how you engage with life and use your energy.
  • Strategy: an approach linked to your Type for responding to situations and opportunities.
  • Authority: the decision-making process suggested by your chart.
  • Profile: two numbers, such as 2/4 or 5/1, linked to themes in learning and relationships.
  • Centers: the nine shapes in the diagram, each linked to a different theme.
  • Gates: numbered points used to explore specific traits and patterns.
  • Channels: connections between Centers that add more detail to a reading.

These parts are read together. One number, shape, or label does not explain everything about you.

How do you read the shapes, colours, and lines?

The diagram can look complex at first. Start with these simple features:

  • Coloured shapes: these are defined Centers. Human Design links them with more consistent themes.
  • White shapes: these are undefined Centers. The system describes them as more open to influence from other people and your surroundings.
  • Numbers: these mark the Gates within the Centers.
  • Lines between shapes: these are the paths where Channels connect Centers.

A white Center is not a weakness, and having more coloured Centers does not mean you have a better chart. There is no ideal chart to aim for.

Where should a beginner start?

Begin with Type, Strategy, and Authority. Read what each means, then think about how the ideas relate to your own experience.

  1. Find your Type in the chart results.
  2. Read the Strategy linked to that Type.
  3. Look at your Authority and its suggested approach to decisions.
  4. Explore your Profile before moving into Gates and Channels.

You do not need to learn every detail at once. Starting with a few clear ideas makes the chart easier to understand.

What can you use your chart for?

You can use a Human Design chart to ask useful questions about daily life. For example:

  • When do I feel rushed into making a decision?
  • Which work habits leave me feeling tired or supported?
  • What patterns do I notice in my relationships?
  • Am I following my own needs or trying to meet other people’s expectations?

Use the chart as one way to reflect, rather than a set of rules. Human Design is not a scientifically validated way to measure personality or predict your future. Your experience, judgement, and circumstances still matter.

Is a Bodygraph the same as a Human Design chart?

The names are often used to mean the same thing. More precisely, the Bodygraph is the visual diagram. A Human Design chart usually includes that diagram along with results such as your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile.
